A while back I published a weblog where I spoke under a cherry tree and I was telling a story about a beggar woman who was desperately trying to find a place to stay on a cold night in the desert. She had been refused again and again from the village people and so her only choice was to ride her small little donkey out into the meadow, just outside of the Village where all of the creatures of the night were roaming. Although she was afraid and was wondering how she would stay warm she looked up at the sky and saw the beautiful starry night and then was taken aback by the glorious cherry tree nearby, which was in full bloom and reflecting the light of the moon. The beauty of the cherry tree stopped her in her tracks and she felt a warm glow come over her entire body, captivated whilst thinking to herself – this is where I will sleep – on the branch of the cherry tree under this voluptuous canopy and let the blossoms shine their beautiful moon glow upon my skin.

Her dejection, her fear, and her cold body all soothed by the welcoming presence of nature, she brought her donkey in and tied him upon the tree. Surrounded by the calming presence of the blossoms and the moonlight, she quietly made her way up the tree and prepared her bed for the night. The many noises of the desert animals now perceptible and distinct amidst the moonlit air – baboon, boar and wildcats sounded like a conversation – not a hunting call she thought to herself surprisingly, as it was not common for night predators. What was even more surprising to her was her own sense of herself – she felt calm, she felt a deep sense of trust, and she felt a knowingness that she would be alright, no matter what. She felt enveloped in a blanket of love as she praised the beauty of life, and then curled herself into the two branches with her small quilt beneath her head and fell asleep for the night.

To say that there is an energetic blanket of love that holds the universe together may sound simplistic or even ‘airy fairy’ – but it’s true and scientific, and yet difficult to sense or imagine, especially after a tragic event like the Boston Marathon bombings. I found myself upon hearing the news, immediately needing to get out into nature and ground myself, to feel and palpate the innate goodness in life, in each other and in what we are made of. The cherry blossoms, the tulips, the hyacinth along with all the birdsong did that for me on Monday night.

We are the only creature on this planet the kills for immoral, political or religious beliefs – the only creature that kills for anything other then survival. Have we lost our moral code? Are we doomed for destruction? Will we continue to use violence, force and dishonest manipulation to no end? And to what end anyway – without a planet to live on. A week ago I posted something on Facebook feed that had a similar question and it was in relation to the North Korean situation, where we have a totally irrational dictator at the controls of deadly weapons with an emotional, unrealistic and irrational agenda. Why can we not stop these people? How do we stop this insanity? And what is our personal responsibility and capacity to not only deal with this reality, but perhaps to be the change we wish to see in the world.

In yogic terms the earth is home to the dimension of duality, we have night and day, positive and negative ions, happy or sad emotions, smooth or hard surfaces, good or evil; all these things make up the way we relate to this reality and the way we relate IN this reality. It’s even how we are made up: a right and left brain, two sides to this fine body right-left, male-female, you get the idea, all of the things that make up this particular incarnation have to do with Duality. Also drawing from the eastern traditions and even old proverbs: everything that is above, is so below – all of the elements that make up the universe are also what make-up us all. So energetically speaking, if the balance of the force field is toward the negative aspect it needs to be counterbalanced with the equal distant positive force field in order to neutralize the polarity. No doubt there is an immense amount of love and life force on this planet and it is only a matter of recognition and acknowledgment that we are able to be reminded of the opulence and presence of this force, just like the beggar woman in the night.

The power of the collective field of energetic, creative intention is unmistakably one of our most potent capacities as humans. The ability to focus our mind and direct intention has remarkable and unprecedented manifestations on this planet in terms of the brilliance of humans and the ability of us to solve problems and make incredible advances in science, art, technology, medicine, music, and yes ecology. We are at the same time, the problem and the solution. One of my teachers challenged me many years ago to track the number of negative thoughts I had in a day. I was a bit put off by this, as I saw myself at the time as a aspiring yogi and somewhat elevated who didn’t have any negative thought, well I was wrong. It turns out that I had many many thoughts that I would tell myself in the course of a day that were counter-productive. It is the ongoing mental dialogue that is the brain, there were all sorts of negative things, and be they ever so insignificant they were still negative thoughts about myself or projections; and indeed it did make up about 80% of my thought force field, just like my teacher had predicted – knowing as he does the human mind. It is the job and purpose of a spiritual practice to refine and expand one’s consciousness towards wholeness, which really means beyond duality – the unbiased presence of totality.

The woman sleeping in the cherry tree had forgotten where she was when she awoke in the middle of the night to adjust herself, disorientated momentarily she looked around and saw many many eyes staring up at her around the bottom of the cherry tree. Her trusting heart never went to fear as she looked down upon the animals holding court for her and she knew there was a larger understanding at work. The animals of the night had made a big circle around the perimeter of the cherry tree, protecting her from any wayward creatures and making sure that she and the donkey had a restful night sleep. She looked upon the sky again, taking in the stars and the waning moon and the shining blossom on her skin, and she said her prayers of gratitude with an open heart laying fully embraced and supported in the Creator’s arms of love.

Although this woman could easily have become bitter and angry, she had likely been turned away many times before, she was able to embrace the present moment and in that – be completely supported by the life force and the potency of It’s love. The daily distractions and challenges to our senses and our faith in humanity are innumerable, we live in a challenging time – where more and more people driven by their own negativity put pressure on the balance of nature. These times are a call to counteract that force and hold court for the cherry trees. These simple spiritual practices are for all of us, and have been given to us from the Masters, as a gift really – as a way of caretaking each other and the planet. And can be as simple as turning a negative thought into positive, expressing a sentiment of gratitude, or focusing on the goodness that makes the cherry-blossom shine in the moonlight.
Bless you all,

WHAT CAN BE DONE WITH PARALYSIS?
OR – A DAY IN THE LIFE OF PARALYSIS

Yesterday I came home from my afternoon walk with Jolie my lovely black lab, a regular routine for me once my helper has got me set up for the day and gone on her way. I have much more independence now than I did earlier when I first became paralyzed 8 years ago. Initially I had to have someone feed, dress and literally do everything for me, except think and dream perhaps! Now I have most of them helping me little, except in the case of dreams and they help me a lot with mine now – which is to help heal the travesty of paralysis.

As I made my way into my apartment with Jolie my noble service dog opening my door, I couldn’t help but notice my neighbor Woody’s door wide open, on a nearly freezing Vancouver day. He will often leave his door open – to air out the cigarette smoke from his apartment, however I’ll usually smell smoke and oddly I didn’t notice it. In any case my hands were freezing from my 40 minute walk and my apartment felt warm and cozy, and I was, as I always am – excited to get out of my chair and onto my daybed and to stretch and relax.

I use a common piece of equipment to get in and out of my wheelchair known as a mechanical lift, it has a sling which I wear around me like a belt and together with a remote I can get up and down. This “sling” has been a godsend, and given me a world of options and independence, something all humans need. It was one of those innovative things I’ve been supported in doing by my ‘dream team’ in this case my occupational therapist. As I settled in, I became more aware of Woody’s voice, he seemed to be calling for someone. Woody has quadriplegia like me, and has had some tough health challenges lately. He relies on 24-hour care, as he is much less mobile than myself for instance, and has a catheter and pressure sore issues.

I listened intently now, to Woody’s calls attempting to distinguish who he was calling. He belongs to a service, which provides 24-hour care, and it seemed he was calling one of them. I wondered after several minutes of listening though, what was going on, as the calls became more and more distressed; and knowing that my neighbor Woody is also like me – a quad but less mobile and confined to a power wheelchair, not able to get up and around nor deal with the situation if he got into trouble very well, I became increasingly concerned. Any number of things can happen for a quad in a power chair, we are a sizable mass with not much control behind a joystick, graphically speaking.

My hands were thawing out from our walk and my body was glad to be out of my chair for my afternoon routine, yet I couldn’t help but notice that the shouting and calls of distress continued, and in fact seemed to be more frequent. I soon got it and realized, I had to get up and go help Woody. Quickly I managed to put myself back into the sling and over to the wheelchair, Jolie by my side balancing my swing and drop. I was feeling urgent as his calls became louder and louder. I got up and out the door and into Woody’s house in minutes, with the help of Jolie.

I came around the corner into Woody’s living room only to be met with a seeming disaster, stuff strewn about the floor with Woody in the middle of the room, his table wrenched up around his neck and his legs under his wheelchair in an skewed position. All of the stuff that had been on his table, spread about the room, the doors and the windows wide open, and Woody sitting there totally in shock -dysreflexic getting sick and obviously very traumatized. After inquiring what was going on he told me that he’d been calling for his helpers for over three hours.

His helper had left Woody to be with his guests and said would come and check on him, as he should do every two hours. Unfortunately for whatever reason and knowing that this is probably a common thing, they hadn’t been back to him for over four hours. His leg bag, which drains his catheter was absolutely overflowing everything in this house was cold, dark and upset; there were no signs of any warmth or welcoming. I set about to help his immediate need but he was too far gone medically with dysreflexia (a paralyzed body’s alert system) and I also could never free him from how his new power chair had wrapped him around his table. So off I went immediately to find his nurses and his aides.

I came upon the staff room and all four of them were sitting in there watching a movie and making popcorn. They seemed to be very nonchalant about the fact that Woody was in trouble and dysreflexic as well as being absolutely freezing cold in his apartment, as I explained the situation. I then said abruptly “You need to come now! You need to come and help Woody.” Again their casualness appalled me as they slowly walked out grabbing their blue gloves they wear everywhere around the complex and followed me to Woody’s place.

I literally had to talk them through how to undo the table off of Woody so that they would avoid hurting his legs while pulling the table out. They seemed to have no concern for the fact that he had legs under there – even though they are paralyzed. Apparently they thought they could just pull this table off even though it was wrapped around his legs, without any thought to the fact these were actual legs that were attached to a person. So I suggested once, then insisted that what we need is to take the table apart to get it off and around him and out-of-the-way. They sighed and moaned and said “Oh why not just push it here?” “No you need to realize that this is a person and although he can’t feel, these legs are still real and attached to a person. So after amateur monkey wrenching we managed to get Woody free and then getting his leg bag emptied and setting him up, so that he was more comfortable.

I went back to my apartment to gather hot-water bottles and blankets and brought them back over only to be met with their boss. As I encountered him I said, “Here, here’s some hot water bottles you can use them to him get warm. His boss said: “Don’t worry he’s fine, he’s fine, this is independent living this is what it’s all about he wants to be on his own what’s your big problem lady.” Shocked, angry and absolutely appalled I went back to my apartment feeling once again the frustration of the realities of spinal cord injury and the lack of knowledge and understanding of the real issues that face the people with this very tragic outcome.

The world of paralysis is often a very desolate, lonely and excruciatingly difficult world to deal with physically, mentally and emotionally. Demeaning, isolating, confusing, traumatizing, devastating, discouraging, are some of the adjectives I’ve heard from others. Notwithstanding the psychological, physical and social counterparts that are affected by losing your mobility, it’s really ones’ independence and capacities to fend for one self, and be absolutely autonomous, that is the hardest blow. Being paralyzed isn’t what most people think. Paralysis is not just the loss of feeling, or a loss of movement – or for that matter- the loss of physical function & processes; it’s actually a distorted nervous system within the whole body. And as such there are so many complications and so much within that paradigm that we don’t understand and that we often misconstrue.

As a matter of fact 1 in 20 Canadians are afflicted with paralysis, but according to an extensive survey commissioned by The Rick Hansen Institute, most Canadians, including many in health care have very limited knowledge – if any about the realities of paralysis from a SCI (spinal cord injury).
In a wide-ranging survey conducted by Angus Reid public opinion, Canadians were asked to estimate the annual costs associated with spinal cord injury (SCI), the unemployment rate for Canadians with SCI, and their opinions on continued investment in related healthcare research and best practices. An estimated 86,000 Canadians have an SCI, with more than 4,300 new cases reported each year.

•	Despite the widespread lack of knowledge about SCI indicated by this poll, The majority of those polled (87%) vastly underestimated the cost of SCI on our society and healthcare system, guessing the figure to be no greater than $100 million a year (around 3% of the actual figure of $3 Billion)
•	Only 7% were able to identify the approximate number of Canadians who develop paralysis each day from stroke and spinal cord injury (estimated at 60 Canadians each day).
•	More than half of Canadians (52%) underestimate the impact on employment for those who have spinal cord injuries. Chronic unemployment – estimated at more than 60% for people with SCI — contributes to the overall cost of spinal cord injury.
•	Approximately 36% of respondents incorrectly believed that once a spinal cord injury was sustained, its effects were permanent. (While damage to the spinal cord can result in permanent paralysis, there are varying degrees of paralysis and recovery of function following a spinal cord injury.)

Summarizing the findings, Bill Barrable CEO from RHI, acknowledges what he surely encounters while heading up the country’s largest non-profit dedicated to improving the quality of life for those affected by SCI. And he states:

“Several results from the poll are indicative of the general lack of knowledge about SCI in Canada and suggest we still have much work to do when it comes to education, research towards cures and advocacy for people living with paralysis from a spinal cord injury,” Bill Barrable, of the Rick Hansen Institute. “Few traumas are as permanently devastating and expensive to care for as SCI. Spinal cord injury continues to be one of the most expensive initial and ongoing health care costs in the entire medical system, yet most Canadians are largely unaware of SCI’s impact on individuals and society as a whole.” Rick Hansen Website

Canadians still attribute high levels of importance to finding a cure, however that doesn’t account for the services, facilities, and help needed for the 100,000 individuals already afflicted. And the crazy thing is, it can happen to anyone-at any time, usually without warning. This is a condition that is desperately misunderstood, commonly generalized into an archaic old medical model for diagnosis and for the most part assumed static and non-negotiable.

I have experienced and know different, and with regular exercise and therapy this condition responds amazingly, keeping in mind the goal is simply quality of life and some independence. Somewhere along the way it seems the BC Coastal Health and government of the day has lost track of the needs and human rights mandate for persons with disabilities, as GF Strong pares down its service and the Rick Hansen/Blusson Spinal Center remains for the most part, an empty shell.

Woody ended up coming down with the flu, and I haven’t seen him for a few days now. This is not surprising, knowing the effect that type of trauma can have on a compromised system. Woody like many is victim of a incongruent system with relation to best practices and care for SCI individuals. We perhaps can’t change someone’s physical affliction but we can change much of the external conditions, and offer more humane and current choices for care, rehabilitation and recovery – to help these people lead an more enjoyable and productive life.

She was a beautiful young woman, her golden hair – thick and shinny, framed her sweet innocent face, one that was a breath of fresh air in my stale hospital room. I met Christina at GF Strong, the largest Rehabilitation Hospital in western Canada, and one which I spent 8 months at back in 2004. My own daughters and Christina were similar in age and she would often spend time with us out & about, or in my room as her family didn’t come around much, if at all.

I loved her youthful spirit and determination, she was so motivated and passionate to help make her situation be anything other than a life sentence of paralysis with no hope of recovery – at eighteen years old. Although the car accident that broke her neck and rendered her a quadriplegic was tragic, nothing to me was more tragic than Christina’s pointless death last November from self-starvation due to frustration and complete hopelessness at the lack of rehabilitation and support here in British Columbia.

Christina’s story is not unique. The incidence of depression, poor health, addiction and suicide run high among many faced with a tragic life circumstance like paralysis, especially in youth or those less advantaged financially and without family. According to the Canadian Paraplegic Association, about 900 Canadians suffer from spinal-cord injuries every year, and that number is generally skewed toward the younger population for the obvious reasons – car accidents and extreme sports, none of which, are on the decline.

“My legs were weak when I started,” Christina Clippingdale told the Georgia Straight in an article, (By Carlito Pablo, February 7, 2008) . “After the six months were over, my muscles were stronger. My muscle bulk increased. My bone density increased a third. My self-esteem was a lot better.” After the research was completed, she asked staff at G. F. Strong if she could continue using the bike. She was allowed to do so, and she maintained a routine of going to the hospital last year. Then, she was informed that she could no longer use the device.Clippingdale was then 21, and all she wanted to do is keep her broken body as healthy as she could.

That article was published in 2008, the same year the much awaited and anticipated ICORD and Rick Hansen/Blusson Spinal Cord Center opened. Christina’s hopes as were many, were resting on that center.I too, had great hopes for what was being touted and campaigned as The World’s leading center for spinal cord discoveries: CORD -Collaboration,Innovation, Repair on Discoveries, which was originally founded in 1995 by Dr. John Steeves with the support of Rick Hansen Foundation and then UBC president Dr. David Strangway. I was a patient at GF Strong when like Cristina, I had herd wind of a new ‘spine center’ being developed, that was in 2004.

Many of us with the brutal prognosis of quadriplegia, were eager and diligent at sourcing out the latest and most promising options and discoveries available anywhere for paralysis and were, of course thrilled to find out a center would be built here in our city. What kind of “center” it would be wasn’t exactly clear and, as in most cases of things taking form, this manifestation involved many interest groups and a lot of funding.

It began to stir up questions within the recipient community, as well as a ‘quiet’ undercurrent amongst the professionals that could be palpated in the air, at the only existing Rehab facility in Western Canada, G.F. Strong. What would happen to G.F Strong and rehab services, was the question already raising eyebrows, many of which we witnessed whilst patients as our rehab and available support services and therapies were being cut more and more by the newly elected government, right before our eyes.

G.F Strong was at one time a world leader in rehabilitation services and supports. It’s original purpose and mission was lofty and ahead of its time, and had respect and distinction for providing the most successful and thorough rehabilitation program for young vets. Following World War ll, there was a large influx of soldiers returning to Canada with permanent disabilities, and there was no facility located in British Columbia/Western Canada to accommodate their needs.

Dr. George Frederick Strong was a driven advocate for the building of a rehabilitation center in BC after his daughter sustained a spinal cord injury. Dr. Strong joined with the Western Division of the Paraplegic Association to realize his dream, and opened ‘GF’ in 1949. With a definitive mandate to rehabilitate and restore as much “quality of life” as possible to each individual, they developed ‘boot camp rehab’, “A (sought after) program which encourages patient’s to realize their abilities and set goals towards rehabilitation.”(Wikepedia)

That was then. By 2006 rehabilitation services in the spine program had dropped back from a full infrastructure with all support services available, to one third of what was offered to me in 2004, and I was in the second wave of cut-backs. At that time, stem cell research and excitement were gaining huge momentum, and paralysis due to spinal cord injury was one of the last on the bucket list as ‘medically unsolvable’ and high on the list of potential benefactors for “the stem cell cure”. It seemed the trend of the medical system and their fund sources had shifted from how to “restore & rehabilitate as much function and quality of life as possible”, to let’s find the cure.

In 2008 CORD then changed to ‘ICORD’, and according to their website this is what happened and what it was to become: “With the opening of the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre in November, 2008, many of ICORD’s multidisciplinary researchers are together under one roof where they can work closely together, and with people living with spinal cord injuries. This has accelerated the discovery, development, and validation of therapies and practices to promote full functional recovery and improved quality of life.”

Surely that would include rehabilitation “practices” and infrastructure, equipment and services that “promote full functional recovery and improved quality of life.”, what else would “development and validation of therapies” mean and how could we do that otherwise?

Recovery and rehabilitation from anything, we all know, is a process, in most cases slow and at times – painstakingly difficult. Therapy at best is also complex and generally expensive. The experience is a metaphor for life, nothing of true value comes easy. By definition the purpose of rehabilitation is to: “restore some or all of the patient’s physical, sensory, and mental capabilities that were lost due to injury, illness, or disease.”

“Rehabilitation includes assisting the patient to compensate for deficits that cannot be reversed medically. It is prescribed after many types of injury, illness, or disease, including amputations, arthritis, cancer, cardiac disease, neurological problems, orthopedic injuries, spinal cord injuries, stroke, and traumatic brain injuries. The Institute of Medicine has estimated that as many as 14% of all Americans may be disabled at any given time.” (Miller-Keane Encyclopedia and Dictionary of Medicine, Nursing, and Allied Health, Seventh Edition. © 2003

The metaphor also is: We all need rehab. I’ve had to “rehab” from many ‘dis-ease’s’ like anorexia to natural occurrences like pregnancy, to unwanted misfortunes like concussion, bone breakage or love-forbid paralysis. Every one of us has to ‘recover’ from something. The real metaphor may be then: Don’t forget the basics in search of the golden egg or goal.

In the summer of 2009 I got a call from Christina, and honestly I didn’t know what to say to her as I listened, while through her tears and anger she told me she could no longer use ‘the bike’, the only light in her day that got her up and out. I tried to encourage her to get out and participate in research, something I had been involved with since the newly christened ICORD had opened, or come and learn from me in my living room or go to the local 50 year old pool the only local option publicly available for differently able as out patients, and yet I could hear the shift in her voice.

“What are they doing at ICORD? Christina demanded frustratingly. “Why do you bother with raising donations or doing research when none of it benefits us?” Good questions and truthfully ones I have been asking myself.”Without access to a functional-electrical-stimulation bike, Clippingdale is at a loss how to get exercise without the risk of injuring herself. “It’s very frustrating, and I find it very unfair,” she said.Bless her heart and may she be peaceful. Unfortunately due to depression and complications from not eating Christina Clippindale is no longer with us. She needed a SCI community rehab center. I felt like I failed this young woman, yet I could not offer her what she needed most.

For me as a massage therapist, yogi and extreme athlete, landing in these boots was one thing, what to do with what I got – based on my aforementioned perception and that of the prevailing breeze, is a whole other conundrum. I have chosen to let my body heal and to support that in the best way possible, that’s not easy with a condition like paralysis and NO professional guidance – but its working and I’m truly living science as my completely severed cord & paralyzed body defy the ‘norm’.

Without a doubt the reality and landscape for a person instantly and traumatically paralyzed has changed incredibly due to the above pioneer’s; not, for sure on all fronts, but nonetheless; and the world is a kinder place to land, in a wheelchair, than it was 10 and most certainly 20years ago. Things like the Federal Rehabilitation Act in 1973, to universal access, to public awareness and a variety of private & independent offerings, not to mention the advances in medicine and research efforts for paralysis. What hasn’t changed is the need for movement, rehabilitation and support services after discharge when the reality hits the fan.

I too, like sweet Cristina ( RIP) have taken the road less traveled in the community of ‘wheelies’, of seeking and noticing the physical and psychological benefits of movement, by getting rehab. I pay dearly for this and find like Christina did, a lot of frustration at why we in B.C., with two potentially top-notch facilities and many sources of private and government funding, have no active, state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility for ongoing treatment & side-by-side research of an ongoing, continually changing, scientifically important, debilitating, and socially expensive condition like paralysis.

After years of being touted as the best GF Strong in BC reduces services, ICORD touted as the place they would “innovate & collaborate” is a research lab, and if you want rehab in BC pay dearly and travel far.

Planting Seeds, The rites of Spring.
Hello. I am thrilled, perhaps like many, to see the bursts of confident colors pushing through the last grasps of winterfs deep chill. Here we are, just past spring equinox and before the birth or resurrection, of new life and initiatives. We are no doubt in a season of change, amidst a time of change. The shift from the dark inner embers of winter to the spring stirrings of undeveloped seedfs, be they thoughts or zinnias, so mirror the personal experience at this time. These collective rhythms embrace us all like the tide whether we are aware of it or not.
It is no surprise to me that many of the general conversations I am hearing from people these days are expressing things about major life challenges, such as dealing with drastic health issues, relationship & family upsets, to making important choices- or perhaps noticing the drain of ones you may have previously made under illusion or denial. Oh yes, it is time for planting again, and the universe has been aligning things to jolt us out of our sleeping patterns in order to prepare the soil for these auspicious times. Some of these mechanisms are obvious like a major weather shift, or an entire country altered by an election and the energy of a new leader. Other forces that influence us can be more subtle, especially if we arenft conscious of them, such as karmic patterns. Nonetheless most of us could agree there are many changes afoot. I certainly feel and notice these powerful forces and shifts at work in my life, how about you?
When we have more information we are better able to see the interrelatedness of things and it helps us to understand the small picture, and cope with the impact of an occurrence by seeing it in the bigger light. For instance, when we consider the new position of Jupiter this spring we discover that Jupiterfs influence is timely. Jupiter (good fortune/expansion) in its least expansive of its placements (taking the place of stern Saturn) will force countries and individuals to take a scrupulous look at their use of resources. Jupiterfs influence will not tolerate wasteful spending, excessive behavior, irresponsibility, or hoarding. Of course there is more to it, here is the link to the vedic astrologer I am citing www.dgoldsteinphd.com , suffice it to say nonetheless there is a lot of that gre-structuringh going on, and it isnft just the Americans. We are all in some way going to be feeling Jupiterfs influence ¡V especially beginning in March and throughout the year.
Personally I canft imagine not having some sort of reference point to help understand and consolidate these experiences – an overarching philosophical world view that diffuses and cancels negative fears and doubts with its wisdom. That world view for me needs to be broad enough to address everything from the nature of the current financial crisis, to the ways energy moves in my body; to astronomy, astrology, anatomy, physics, even the nature of the mind ¡V It needs to explain it all. Yoga is the science of consciousness; energetic and physical, it sees and acknowledges the patterns or ways in which energy/nature/life force ¡V such as the seasons – moves and behaves. And it is also a methodology for creating the perfect environment physically, mentally and spiritually for providing that very life force the best possible environment for consciousness to occur.
In a time of intense movement of life forces – the spring equinox and the renewal and influence of the astrological skies spurring new beginnings – we are in a prime place to align, clean out and re-design. Attuning yourself to the natural cycles and creating rituals and practices to honor and imbue the power of creation is highly beneficial and rewarding. Many of these techniques reflect the processes at work already, such as weeding the garden for sowing, flushing of rivers, removal of old debri. Here some of the practices I have found helpful and which you may want to consider.
The yogic tradition, like many traditions, offer guidance for this time such as doing a fast or an internal cleanse. An ayurvedic practice, such as panchakama was revered at this time for clearing the ama or wastes and building ojas or fire as well as willpower. Try looking up www.indigoyogahealing.com which describe these practices in detail. You can also find a recipe on Mary-Jofs site www.mary-jo.com for gkitcherieh a single bowl food that is excellent for cleansing and fasting on. Remember the importance of staying ggroundedh by doing simple sama vriti ¡V equal breathing with the inhale and exhale; you can also visualize deep roots growing down from your spine into the earth; & check out trinityfs website www.trinityyoga.net for the Dragon & Tiger practice or any other guided meditation from the classical Tantra yoga tradition.
In addition, attempt to do some sort of a renunciation practice, ideally giving up some habit or rut to a new rite or ritual ¡V this could be as simple as switching any negative thought, belief or judgment as soon as it arises to a neutral place or opposite in a state of acceptance and love. There is also much to be said for committing to a new practice at this time under the guidance of your teacher or someone you trust. With all of the external change and upheaval around us, it is essential to stay peaceful and calm, drawing deep from the eternal wellsprings of Truth and Light.
We here at Trinity are similarly going through change and new beginnings. In the hopes of offering you – the students, the very finest of what yoga has to offer and in giving time to incubate what my place is in that ¡V we will maintain our roots and yours and be available as we reformat, call or write at the usual coordinates. Please stay tuned for our new growth. In the meantime Ifd like to introduce to some, and rekindle for many, an old friend and Trinity gal – Sharon Thompson who will be tending the roots of our connections through the Trinity newsletter, welcome Sharon!
Blessings of love & Light,
Mary-Jo

Hello Fellow Trinity Yoga Alumni. This is Sharon Thompson.

I am writing to keep in touch with my fellow Trinity Yoga Teachers. This creation started with a conversation with Mary Jo where I made a comment something like this; “I would like to stay in touch with my Trinity Yoga community.” To my amazement the energy flowed with these simple words and evolved into the opportunity to communicate with all of you at one time. Writing this column for the newsletter, I am keeping in touch and creating a space for future connections for all the Trinity Yoga Alumni. How exciting for all of us.

I will refresh your memory by introducing myself as a reminder of our connection with Trinity Yoga. My name is Sharon Thompson, perhaps you will know me as your classmate and fellow graduate of Trinity Yoga teacher program during the year 2004/05. Others may have met me as a facilitator during their Trinity Yoga Teacher training program throughout your Level 1, 2 or 3 the following years in Alberta and BC. Some of you may know me as Mary Jo’s personnel assistant. No matter what – After my graduation from teacher training the door of my life blew wide open. Opening my heart, trusting my intuition, & believing in myself allowed me to accept invitations for growth and self development. Time on my yoga mat, Trinity Yoga personnel development skills, and encouragement from family and friends, gave me wings to relocated to the beautiful Sunshine Coast. Yes, letting go of my Alberta roots and following my heart, I am blessed to live and work at the beach. My yoga is developing with yoga retreats, workshops and learning with an Iyengar teacher.

Trusting my heart, asking myself want makes me happy has expanded my talents into the gift of touch with bodywork and massage. Now I am blessed to be surrounded by Mother Earthfs beauty giving people the gift of healing touch, by the grace of god. There were challenges along the way, tears of letting go, fears of unspoken doubts, however through it all was trust in the flow and my faith in the feeling this being right. I found the courage to move through the process and find contentment.

So, Trinity Yoga Alumni I thank you for the opportunity to share with you my life since graduation. More importantly, I invite you to keep in touch by offering your heartfelt memories of your teacher training, new adventures and lifestyle challenges, or perhaps a little insight to whats happening in your life now. I have feelings of love, and support for the bond that connects us through the fellowship of Trinity Yoga Alumni. Today, I am wishing for more experiences, sharing more adventures, and caring for each of our growth and development. Trinity Yoga Alumni let’s keep in touch. Blessings from Sharon

Mary-Jofs 1 week (or more if you choose) Kitcharee Plan Courtesay Madhuri, INDIGO YOGA. www.indigoyogahealing.com

*buy mung beans (the tiny yellow split mung beans/dal) and white basmati rice (it is more easily digested that brown rice and traditionally used in kitcharee
* mung beans are best soaked overnight but if time does not allow a good rinse before cooking works ok as well
* when cooking the kitcharee there may be a foam that surfaces, skim this off of the top as you are cooking this will assist in better digestion
* be creative with the choice of spices and please add vegetables into the pot as you cook to make a really tasty meal
* I have found that I like to use more spice than is generally recommended in a kitcharee recipie- this is fine to do for the nature of your week long kitcharee ecleansef
* the energy that goes into cooking the food is very important, chanting OM mentally or verbally is wonderful or the mantra: Om Aim Hrim Klim Chamundayi Vichee Namaha

many blessings,
madhuri

The Key to Health ¡X Agni
Food is converted into healthy tissues and organs when it is transformed by a healthy digestive fire, known as agni is then absorbed by the bodyfs cells. According to Ayurveda, everything we take into our bodies through the mouth, breath and skin, and into our minds through our senses and thoughts, is converted for use by digestive agni. In this way, the sum of everything we eat, see, hear, and think becomes who we are.
When our digestive fire is strong and healthy, our tissues and organs are healthy, we have good immunity against disease, and our outlook on life is naturally vibrant and joyful. If our digestive fire is not strong, the food we eat putrefies inside us, which can lead to premature aging, obesity, low energy, low immunity, or emotional disturbances such as depression or anxiety.
The Start of all Disease ¡X Ama
When the digestive agni is weak, undigested food particles begin accumulating in the digestive system, resulting in a mucus-like, toxic substance called ama. This ama forms first in the digestive tract, but sooner or later spills over into the blood, muscles, fat, bone and even the nervous system. According to Ayurveda, accumulated ama is the start of all illnesses. It creates blockages in the bodyfs channels causing stagnant energy of nutrients and leading to disease and emotional disturbances.
How does ama form?
钋	Eating fried or fatty foods, red meat, wheat, and refined sugar
钋	Drinking excess water during meals
钋	Drinking ice cold beverages or ice cream regularly
钋	Eating dry, heavy or cold meals regularly
钋	Staying up late at night or traveling excessively
钋	Having a sedentary or stressful lifestyle
How can you get rid of ama?
钋	Maintaining a strong digestive fire so that all food you eat is fully digested
钋	Taking supportive herbal formulas that dissolve ama and blockages caused by ama
钋	Eliminating ama from the body by fasting or detoxification practices like pancha karma.
Foods that Weaken Digestive Agni
The digestive fire can weaken if you overindulge in spicy, cold or fatty foods, if you eat the wrong kinds of foods for your unique constitution, or if you are under stress. Below is a list of foods that may weaken the digestive fire in all constitutions. These should be avoided or eliminated from your diet if you want to regain vibrant health. If you must eat these foods, try for a maximum of three times per week.
HEAVY TO DIGEST FOODS such as wheat, meat (esp. red meat), refined sugar and deep fried foods. These foods severely decrease the digestive agni and produce mucus and toxic ama.
SOUR AND SPICY FOODS such as tomatoes, all sour fruits (oranges, pineapples, lemons, grapefruits etc.), vinegars and hot spices like chilies. These foods, when eaten excessively, increase pitta heat in the body and eventually reduce digestive power.
FERMENTED FOODS such as yogurt, alcohol, cheese (especially old and hard ones like Bleu cheese, camembert, brie, etc.) and yeast containing foods such as veggie pâtés, soy sauce and beer. Foods that are fermented are sour and heating in nature and though they balance vata in small amounts, they increase pitta. This results in more gas, as well as decreased digestion and assimilation of nutrients.
ICE COLD FOODS AND DRINKS kill the digestive fire. They are best avoided totally. If taken as refreshment during hot summer days, wait 2 hours after or before meals.
CANNED, PACKAGED AND MICROWAVED FOODS! They have limited nutritional value, weaken the digestive fire and produce toxins in the body.
Ayurvedic Recipes
Food should taste, smell and look delicious, as this combination causes our digestive fire to blaze and our food to digest well. Like any cooking discipline, there are elements of both art and science involved. The key to learning how to cook Ayurvedically is to start with a good recipe, and then gradually branch out from there.
Kichari
THE PRIMARY BALANCING FOOD
Kichari is a nourishing and delicious dish of basmati rice cooked with split mung beans, ghee and spices. It is one of the staples of the Ayurvedic diet and is often the only food that is served during the detoxification and rejuvenation therapies of pancha karma. Kichari is suitable for all body types and is highly nutritious, a near perfect blend of proteins and nutrients. Since it does not aggravate Vata, Pitta or Kapha, eating it alone for a few days at a time allows the body to rest and recuperate during illness or intensive therapy. Kichari can be served by itself or with vegetables, and the consistency may be like a soup or more like a rice dish or casserole.
INGREDIENTS
1 cup basmati rice
1 cup split mung beans (yellow mung dhal)*
1 tsp. mustard seeds
1 tsp. cumin powder *
1 tsp coriander powder *
½ tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp Grated ginger
Serve with grated coconut, sea salt, fresh lime, chopped cilantro
* These quantities can be doubled or modified for more flavor or different properties.
PREPARATION
Heat the spices in a large deep saucepan with a little bit of water. When the mustard seeds pop, add cumin, coriander, turmeric. Sauté for a minute or so, then add the split mung beans and finally the rice. Stir until all foods are flavored and colored with the spice mixture. Add 5 to 8 cups of water and let the food come to a boil. After 5 minutes, reduce heat to simmer and let cook for about 30-35 minutes or until the beans are completely soft. Then and only then, add a little salt. Serve the dish with freshly chopped cilantro. You can add more water if you like a more soupy consistency. As mentioned above, you can experiment with different vegetables and spices to create different flavors and different properties. You can add your chosen vegetables during the last 15-20 minutes of your cooking time. Always be mindful of the properties of all foods you eat, and try to eat according to your dosha. Winter squash is best for extra fiber, greens are best for balancing the spicy qualities of the herbs.
Green Mung Bean Soup
BENEFITS
In Ayurveda, Mung Bean Soup (also called mung dal) has a magical and powerful effect! It helps to balance all 3 doshas. Its spices are part of the medicinal quality of this delicious and nourishing soup. When combined with certain sharp and penetrating herbs, the blocks created by ama (toxic mucus that lodges in the body over time due to poor diet, lack of exercise and wrong lifestyle) are broken and flushed out of the body.
INGREDIENTS
1 cup whole green Mung beans – soaked overnight in 2 cups water + 1 tsp. salt
4 cups fresh water after straining soaked beans ¡V add more to make it more soupy
1 tbs. Sunflower oil or ghee
½ tsp. Mustard seeds *
1 Bay leaf
½ tsp. Turmeric
1 tsp. mixed Cumin and Coriander Powder *
1½ tsp. Ginger – chopped or grated
1½ tsp. Lemon juice
1 tsp. raw Sugar cane juice–succanat (optional)
Preparation Time: 45 minutes
*you can double the amount of these spices if you want to add more taste
METHOD OF PREPARATION
Soak the whole green mung beans overnight in water. Drain the mung beans, wash them two times and then cook them for about 40-45 minutes (the hulls should be broken.) In a separate large and deep saucepan, heat the oil or ghee and add mustard seeds. When mustard seeds pop, bay leaf, turmeric, cumin, coriander, ginger and a pinch of black pepper. Mix well and do not allow to burn. Place the cooked beans with the fresh water and the remaining ingredients into the herbal mixture in the saucepan. Bring to a boil then simmer for a few minutes more. Enjoy!
MUNG BEAN SOUP CURE:
It is beneficial to fast on Mung Bean Soup. You can start with 3-5 day fast, eating only mung bean soup for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Then add cooked vegetables like squashes and leafy greens for two days. Finally, add a ½ cup of rice for two days. Then return to your normal diet. You can also do a mung soup fast for half a day if you feel you have eaten something too heavy the day before.
Rice Gruel
HEALTH BENEFITS:
Rice gruel is a light and digestible breakfast or snack food to eat during the day. It is a very nourishing food.
INGREDIENTS
½ cup basmati rice
2-4 cups hot water
1 tsp ginger root
1/4 tsp. salt
PREPARATION
Rinse the rice and cook for around 35-40 minutes
For different tastes: Use ¼ teaspoon each of cinnamon and cardamom, with a pinch of saffron, sweeten with maple syrup or succanat. Or, alternately: Use ¼ tsp each of cumin, coriander and fennel, with a squirt of Braggfs Liquid aminos or squeeze of lemon juice to taste.
NOTE: You may add more water and blend into a warm smoothie for easier digestion.
Ginger Water
Ginger water has the quality to cut into and loosen mucus as well as stimulate your digestive fire. Due to this stimulating action on the digestion it is also the perfect drink to be taken either before you eat a meal or half an hour afterwards.
To make:Cut 4-5 slices of fresh ginger root and place in a pan of water. Bring it to a boil and allow it to simmer for at least 5 minutes. Strain into a mug and enjoy! If you wish to sweeten it with honey, add it only after the liquid has cooled to drinking temperature, as honey is not heat stable.

Hi everone. I’m winding down my body after a challenging few days. My latest experiment has been to construct a full body “jolly jumper” down here in the land of magical manifestation. A jolly jumper falls into one of my notions that if I create the right environment for healing to occur – it will, thats nature. If I knick my hand, and take care of the details, my body will do the rest – heal itself. The jolly jumper also represents another notion I have about the body in its wisdom and mystery – the body is movement, the pulse of life, that is its nature. When external “out in the world movement is reduced (either by choice or chance) one becomes more aware and intimate of moving with/into the inner rythyms of your beingness.. something I had mentioned in my latest weblog/video Baba Hari Dass’s
